Thinking about what the internet and technology will be like 10 years from now is pretty damn scary. When I interview people I like to ask them what they think of the future of the net and online businesses and I’ve received some pretty interesting answers.

Here’s my take:

Online Women Entrepreneurs Need To Pace Themselves

Saving time means pacing yourself, being organized, and always prioritizing your duties, responsibilities and efforts.

Pacing yourself means allowing time for unexpected situations, such as having enough time to check the ever-growing inbox, setting-up special autoresponders for automatic responses (a miraculous tool…really), and other technical issues of running an interactive website and blog.

Independent Auto Detail Shop VS Biz Op or Franchise

December 3, 2008 · Filed Under Entrepreneurialism · Comment

Owning a detail shop can be an exciting and rewarding business indeed. Many times an owner of an independent Detailing Shop will wish to add those items he/she believes their customers want. Since an independent detail shop is not a franchise or affiliate they can try new things and do what ever they want. They use their knowledge of the industry, a little intuition and luck; it is a best guess issue. For an independent detailing shop entrepreneur; there is no proven business plan to go by, but the savvy operator who is in touch with their customers seldom has to face a shot in the dark.

A franchise system on the other hand has grown through market adaptation and innovation. There is really little guesswork since other franchisees and corporate units have already been there and done that. Companies such as Detail Plus, Ziebart and The Detail Guys with a combined number of nearly 1000 units sold; take the school of hard knocks out of the equation in trade for a periodic royalty payment for their experience. That experience is available on an ongoing basis as well as all the benefits of all new innovations from their teams (franchisees).

Do you approach business conventions with an open mind?

Have you ever noticed some businesspeople view a particular business expo as having been “wonderful” while others thought “it wasn’t worth their time?” Do you ever wonder how there can be such two opposing points of view and, more importantly, how you can put yourself in the first category the next time around?

… in Pursuing the American Dream

This morning I woke up at 4:30 in the morning, as usual, poured myself a cup of coffee, as usual, and thought about what my son said to me yesterday evening. You see, he’s 2 1/2 years old and talking quite well, for his age. When I came home from working all day I was greeted with the always joyous “daddy’s home, daddy’s home” but today, this greeting was followed by “daddy no you go to work!”. It’s amazing what a 2 year old can know and understand.

So, as I sat and thought, several things occurred to me. #1, I hate having to go to work all day, #2 my son hates me going to work and #3 at least 1/3 of my life has been dedicated to earning money. None of this was sitting very well with me. The last realization really repulsed me! What good is a life if you spend it in an office building or beat yourself up building that office building, as in my case.

Should Entrepreneurs Hire Entrepreneurs?

November 29, 2008 · Filed Under Entrepreneurialism · Comment

An interesting question came up the other day which warrants attention. The question was whether entrepreneurs should hire entrepreneurs. In thinking about how to answer this question, I started thinking about a book written by Michael Gerber entitled The eMyth.

In his book, Gerber discusses that an entrepreneur encompasses three roles: the technician, the manager, and the visionary. As a technician, the entrepreneur is able to perform the core tasks that the business performs such as baking a cake or coding software, etc.. As a manager, the entrepreneur is able to direct others in the organization to work effectively as a team. Finally, as a visionary, the entrepreneur is able to develop a picture of where the business should be in one, five, and ten plus years and plot the course to get there.
